Tim Jansen
Backbone International
Team Supervisor
Summer 2018 & 2019
Backbone international is a company specialized in technical production and production management for events such as festivals. I worked for Backbone in both the summer of 2018 and 2019 on multiple projects:

-
EDC Las Vegas
-
EDC Las Vegas is an annual electronic dance festival with an attendance of 400,000 people over three days. Camp EDC is a campground with 4500 ShiftPod tents that accompanies the main festival. I was in charge of a team of 25 workers and was tasked to build the tents which included both electrical outlets and AC. I developed a system of building these tents to speed up construction while still attaining quality of work. Because the event takes place in May in Las Vegas, safety was a huge priority. Dehydration can easily happen in such conditions especially when performing manual labor. Therefore, my main priority was to create a culture where everyone on my team looks out for each other to prevent accidents.

Hard Summer Festival
-
Hard Summer Festival is another electronic dance festival that takes place in San Bernardino CA with an attendance of about 170,000 people. For this event, I was part of the exterior operations team. Exterior operations builds and manages any aspect of the event which is outside of the festival grounds. This includes entrance and ID check constructions, traffic plans, barriers, and lighting. My main role was to design and execute traffic plans while working with local law enforcement to optimize vehicular and pedestrian traffic. I analyzed the road network and identified chokepoints along routes and look at numerical traffic data while taking human factors into consideration. Because of my work, travel times were only 5% longer in the surrounding area which is low considering the number of people in attendance.

Bechtel Corporation
Construction Field Engineer Intern
July 2020
While interning for Bechtel, I learned about the inner workings of an engineering, procurement, and construction company. Specifically, the aspects of a project that Bechtel looks at when deciding to bid on a project. During this time I also increased my knowledge on safety in the workplace through completing case studies. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, my internship was moved online this did, however, improve my skills of effectively communicating with a team online. Although my internship was online, I still was able to get experience in what a field engineer does by shadowing some of my supervisors. As a field engineer intern, I learned to utilize my problem-solving skill efficiently by looking at aspects of projects where problems could easily arise to ensure safety throughout the worksite.
